Removable full and partial dentures
People lose their teeth for many reasons, but the most common are periodontal disease and severe tooth decay. Whether you are missing all of your teeth, or just several teeth in one area, dentures will help improve your ability to chew and speak naturally. In addition, dentures provide support for the lips and cheeks in the areas where teeth are missing, improving your appearance and self-esteem.
Unlike bridges and dental implants which are not removable, both types of dentures—full and partial dentures—are removable.
- Full dentures are used to replace all teeth in an arch (upper and/or lower). They may be entirely supported and retained by your natural ridge, or by dental implants, which are surgically placed in the jaw bone.
- Removable “partial” dentures replace teeth when only some of the teeth in an arch are missing. They may be supported by teeth or implants, or retained by a dental clasp, and typically consist of natural-looking replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base.
In most cases, dentures are made 8-12 weeks after teeth are removed, allowing time for the gum tissue to heal. Dr. Stanfield will make a series of impressions of your jaw and take detailed measurements of your mouth. Models are constructed and used to fabricate a custom denture for you to enhance your appearance and chewing ability.
